The 2009 FDIC National Survey of Unbanked and Underbanked Households

The survey results presented on this website and contained in the full report are based on a FDIC-sponsored supplement to the Census Bureau's Current Population Survey conducted in January 2009. These initial summary results provide insights into the size of the unbanked and underbanked markets, their demographic characteristics, and reasons for not participating fully in the financial mainstream. It's the first time such data is available at the national, state and large Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) levels.
